Bridges

Bridges link two places and make it easy for people to move from one end to another. This bridge built across a river/ creek close to downtown Dallas makes a statement that it is possible to have a little green space between an urban metropolis also.

In downtown Dallas adjacent to the pioneer cemetery is this beautiful cattle drive sculpture... One of the first places I visited when I was new in America.

Old Red Museum in Downtown Dallas

I had the opportunity to revisit Downtown Dallas and take in some of the sights it has to offer. Of course the Old Red Museum which used to be prison is one stately building that everyone should take a look at. Here are some pictures of the museum as it stands. I like the way it has been maintained with public funding. It is interesting to note that national and state pride makes these people spend enormous amounts of money to showcase their history and heritage to their own people and visitors alike.

Place for quiet contemplation

In the heart of downtown Dallas is this fairly large space with concrete structures designated as a quiet place for contemplation in memory of late President Kennedy. This location is not far from where the former president of US was shot makes us aware that life is short and can end at any time. When the time is up, even the most important people have to leave. That is the law of the universe. I hope the corporate executives that mill around this location will find a moment to quietly contemplate on life at this location, irrespective of their political affiliation....

Downtown Dallas Revisited

I recently visited Downtown Dallas, this time as a guide to show someone around town... five years ago someone was driving me around doing the same. Now the roles are reversed, I am quite well versed with this area and armed with a GPS which will enable me to go anywhere I wish to. Anyway here are some pictures of Downtown area.

Old Red Museum, Dallas

One of the old attractions in the downtown area of Dallas, the Old Red Museum continues to draw crowds of tourists and locals alike. It used to be a prison in the past and then became a court house and now it is a museum. Presents a stately look amidst the usual pale colored concrete and glass buildings.

Dallas Downtown images

The Old Red Museum is one of the imposing buildings in the downtown Dallas area. This is one of the older structures and as such is shaped differently, otherwise it would be another matchbox with smooth square and brick exteriors.

Vistas of Sherman, Texas

Sherman is a small town far north of Dallas. Strictly not a part of the DFW Metro area but it is not surprising to see people from Sherman working in Dallas and commuting everyday. I was driving past Sherman and since I was passing through downtown area of this nondescript city I just captured some of the imposing positive images to present on my blog.

When foreigners come to India they don't want to capture images of opulence, such as the swank malls in Bengaluru, or Mumbai but they want to go to the slums, find poor people and take these images. I guess this will give them an ego boost that they are better than us. But we Indians in America don't do that, we would take pictures of things that praise our adopted residence.

Snowed Out in Dallas

Cars covered by snow, slippery roads, sparse traffic, closed schools, and offices... characterized the past five days of snow in North Texas area. I have been pretty much home bound all these days. Hopefully it will clear up a little tomorrow so I can get to work.

Republic Day 2011

Another year and another Republic Day and India has been a republic for 61 years. In my lifetime this is the third year that I am not spending this momentous occasion in India. I am glad that I remembered that and was glad that my parents back home in India made some village kids aware of this occasion by distributing sweets at the school flag hoisting ceremony.

Sitting here, in Dallas, Texas the most I can do is to remember!!!

Road Views - Mobile Photography

I have now discovered a different method of capturing images as I drive around the sprawling DFW Metro area in North Texas going to school, work, and while running errands. I shoot images on the phone, send it to the laptop via bluetooth and then use the computer to upload the images onto my blog. A rather convoluted process but then hey... I am still waiting for the gadget of my dreams.... a complete computer in the size of an IPad that also incorporates a sim-card holding facility for phones. Till then this will be my mode of photo-blogging.

Here are some of the latest pictures I shot...

Street views in and around Dallas

For a long time in the past few weeks I have attempted to be more regular at updating my blogs. But, life happens and then here I'm trying to post some images onto my blog. These images were shot when I was travel from school to home or when I go to work and of course on errands like grocery shopping, paying bills, etc. These images reveal the essence of what I call the American way.

These pictures taken on the road depict commercials, clouds, accidents, etc.

This is an accident scene off highway 635 when an 18 wheeler had hurtled off the road. I wonder what the driver trying to do with this huge vehicle when this happened.

Jogger Killed in Accident

I first heard about this news from a friend of mine and was rendered breathless. The video is a news report about a woman who was hit by a bicycle as she was jogging in a famous hiking, walking, bicycling trail in Dallas. She succombed to her injuries. This extremely saddening incident has revealed yet another weak underbelly of the mighty American infrastructure. There is such good facilities for sports and people here love to look and feel young so everyone is out there on the trails and in the parks trying to keep fit and look young. When this happens even in sparsely populated America it is difficult to keep trails from getting crowded. Unfortunately this kind of incidents take place when people get so focussed on fitness, that they forget even basic necessities of safety and mutual respect to each other. The debate of runners vs bikers is on once again....

Photo n text from blackberry

It's raining in Dallas. This kind of rain marks the end of summer and the arrival of fall which leads to the freezing dry cold of winter.

This morning as I drove to class I captured some sights on my handheld's camera. Rian soaked roads, some public display artworks and trivia associated with Dallas area.

A bit of humour - hope I wont be yelled at!!!

I was driving back home from Dallas recently and in order to avoid the peak hour traffic I took a detour through one of the side roads. I saw this church perched at the corner of one of the intersections and my first thought was... wow this church definitely knows how to pray, they call their place of worship as "Life" because they celebrate the ultimate gift of god.

On a lighter note a thought came to my mind when life is definite so is death and wondered if there was a church known as "The Death Church"... I wouldn't be surprised if it there is one such institution in the United States of America.

Summer rains create awesome clouds

Dallas is quite peculiar in terms of weather. It was searing hot during the past weeks and today out of the blue it showered. I guess winter is setting in sooner than expected... I sure look forward to the cold weather. This cloud formations that result from this kind of erratic weather are awesome to look and capture on the camera. I neither have a fancy camera nor do I have great photography skills, I just try to do something with my mobile camera and you can see the results here.

Here are couple of images I captured while returning from work.

More mobile pictures

Here are some more pictures shot in my mobile phone. These were shot at the Frontier Flight Museum, which has been created in a large hanger in the Dallas Love Field Airport, Texas. The museum has several interesting exhibits including a replica of the original plane flown by Wright Brothers. The museum would be a great place for kids to learn about the vivid world of aviation and war birds.
