New Orleans' French Market

This is supposed to be the French Market in New Orleans, but most of the vendors here are not French. In fact there are a wide variety of nationalities represented there, Chinese, Indians, Pakistanis, Africans, etc. The array of merchandise being sold is equally diverse. I wonder why it is still known as French Market.
