Winter is here and has brought snow with it. This the time of the year two types of destinations get crowded: the first are snowy places with ski slopes and the second is warm beach destinations. The preference of the people is of course the former destination. Youngsters love to go out and hurtle down snowy slopes on their skis.
When it comes to skiing one of the most popular destination is the Vail Valley where a number of activities are possible. There is skiing, golf, fly fishing, rafting down the river Colorado, etc.

Now staying at a hotel in such a beautiful location may not be your choice. I personally prefer to opt for vail valley vacation rentals so that I can feel more at home and there is definitely greater room for the entire family. While at Vail valley one can stay at one of the resort communities, or even rent a luxury home or condo in a beautiful mountain setting.

It would be a complete waste of a holiday if one were to stay at a hotel instead of vail vacation rentals. The relaxed feeling I get while at home, even if it is a vacation rental is just unparalleled.

Another close by location is the Beaver Creek area where accommodations are scarce. The exotic location attracts tourists by droves and if you have not reserved your beaver creek vacation rentals well in advance it would be rather difficult to get a place to stay.

New Orleans World War Memorial

I have always respected soldiers, men and women, who fight for their country and sometimes even make the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty. Irrespective of which country they belong they are all spurred by the goal of protecting their country or destroying their enemy country (except the Indian army). I visit war memorials when I come to know of one in the vicinity. While at New Orleans I decided to visit this world war memorial in the Ninth Ward and was surely surprised by the way the memorial had been fashioned. The memorial as a whole is similar to the Arch of Titus, but in listing out the names the front has only white soldiers names, while black and colored people are mentioned in a separate list in the back of the memorial. In short even in death for the country the glory for non-white people is little lesser. I hope this has changed since then.

Travails of Holiday Travel

I love traveling and every year I try to visit a new country/ state or a place I have never been to. This kind of wanderings help me learn about new places, experience diverse cultures and most importantly make me aware of my own prejudices and weaknesses.

One of the biggest challenge of visiting a new place, especially one where you can't drive to is the local transport. First the destination is new, sometimes the language is also new, and I don't know anything about local transport/ taxi services etc. This makes me stuck and dependent on tourism agencies and guides, which I am not very comfortable.

Recently while I visited Europe I decided to go in for Car Hire in Spain and do some exploration on my own. Looking back I think this indeed was a very wise decision. It not only helped me decide where to go and how much time to spend but also made me feel at home in an alien city. Thanks to the wonderful service provided by the car hire company which I accessed online, I couldn't ask for more. It was like driving around in my own home town. I had a few glitches in terms of directions, I had to look more frequently at the map, but that is a small inconvenience compared to the many benefits.

One of the features of American cities that I like is their affinity for art. Even if the city is an impoverished town like New Orleans, LA there are places in the city where one can find beautiful artistic sculptures, statues of important people, war memorials, etc installed across the main thoroughfares. In my opinion this is a great way to mold the younger generation into productive, patriotic and responsible citizens of a country. By constantly reaffirming only the good things about a civilization the children are subtly taken in the direction the establishment wishes them to go. This is good for the individual, society and the country.

In fact there are a wide variety of nationalities represented there, Chinese, Indians, Pakistanis, Africans, etc. The array of merchandise being sold is equally diverse. I wonder why it is still known as French Market.

One of the biggest problems facing developed nations like the US is rampant abuse of drugs. These narcotics are smuggled mostly from Mexico and sold on the streets in all cities in the US. Even in small towns there are 3-4 cases reported every week. Several non-profit organizations are working hard to convince abusers to opt for drug treatment so that they will be able to lead a normal, productive life.
This is easier said than done, first of all many of these people don't want to opt into addiction recovery programs. It takes lot of convincing and hard work on the part of social workers, volunteers, teachers, families, and sometimes law enforcement agencies to make drug abusers agree for treatment.
Another equally serious problem is addiction to alcohol which has in the past led to murders, and other crimes. There are new programs in alcohol rehabilitation for people who are hopelessly addicted. This program helps them get sober and remain so for a long time, hopefully for life.

When I visited San Antonio last year I marveled at the numerous artworks installed at various locations in the city. I must say that there is a concentration of sculptures in the river walk and other tourist areas. These installations coupled with lots of public seating areas provide a great opportunity for tourists to relax amidst art. These are works of recent artists from US and Mexico. Last year I had gone to San Antonio where the great war between Mexico and Texas happened. The Alamo in San Antonio is the site of this great battle when Texas got liberated and became an independent nation. San Antonio has something unique, a River Walk, the river Rio Grande flows smack in the center of the town and alongside areas have been developed into shopping, eating and entertainment venues. Wildflowers of rural Bangalore

I have blogged extensively about the wild flowers in Texas and Oklahoma. These are flowers planted by the authorities by the sides of highways and in public spaces. I was going through one of my photo albums online and found that I had captured some images of wildflowers in my home zone too. These were shot not besides the road, but along hiking trails, in the wilderness around Bangalore aka Silicon Valley of India.

These pictures were shot while on a hike to an old fortress near Bangalore. One of the few locations where we fought the invading British armies formidably till some traitor betrayed our armies. Anyway today these forts are wilderness and outdoor adventure areas. Here are two pictures of a beautiful cactus flower captured during one of the hikes.

Views of the Meteor Crater

Yesterday I blogged about our visit to Meteor Crater and how the private owners have created a swank shopping and educative space in the desert. This is a very successful business model which benefits the individual, visitors and the government. The individual owner of the property preserves, maintains, and promotes the place. Visitors get the opportunity to learn about meteors and other space phenomena and the government gets its taxes. It is a win-all situation from all aspects.
Here are some more pictures of the Meteor Crater. I wish they would allow visitors to go down into the depths of the crater, but since they have done some mining in the past looking for precious metals at the site of the meteor fall, they are little wary of letting people inside the crater. For now visitors have to content themselves looking over the rim of the crater and the museum does offer some guided hiking tours which take visitors half-way round the crater.

Every living being from the tiniest insect to the largest mammal has a biological clock, meaning the body needs certain amount of sleep at regular intervals. If this biological clock or rhythm as it is sometimes known as is disrupted it could lead to serious ailments. Animals and birds sleep out in the open in caves, trees, bushes, etc. We as human beings, we need more than just a place to sleep. For us sleep has to be comfortable, relaxing and rejuvenating. In order to achieve this one has to sleep in a comfortable bed for at least 8 hours a day in my opinion.

Keeping these aspects in mind large corporations commission research and bring out newer products aimed at providing extra comfort and relaxation when we sleep. We come across numerous advertisements listing beds for sale. That is the importance of sleep in an individuals life. Without proper sleep one tends to be irritable, distracted, weary and tired. This could happen even if an individual has not slept on a good bed, because the body will be disturbed through the night though one may be asleep.
Sleep is an important facet of our health and using the right bed is even more important if we want to live a long and healthy life. Sleeping on uncomfortable beds could give us back pain, body aches, and sometimes even migraine headaches.

Meteor Crater, Arizona

Meteor Crater in Arizona is one of the largest craters in the world formed as a result of impact of meteor showers. Surprisingly this crater is not a government owned national monument, but a privately held museum which offers tours, and allows visitors to look around for a fee. One good thing though is that the private owners of this crater have not modified it or exploited the land for commercial purposes. The location continues to be one huge crater located amidst the rugged desert/ arid state of Arizona in the US. This location has been used by the NASA to train astronauts in the past. There have been allegations that the original moon landing by Neil Armstrong, et al was a hoax and that it was filmed here. I don't know about those conspiracy theories, all I know is that I visited this huge crater and stood on its periphery. The attached exhibition is a great place to learn about space explorations, meteors and comets. It would be a great place to take kids to educate them in a fun filled way about space.
